Gaming and Simulations Based Learning: Applications for Medicine

Speaker:

James "Butch" Rosser
Beth Israel Hospital, New York City

WORK SUMMARY:
Dr. Rosser completed his medical training at the University of Mississippi , and a residency in surgery at Akron General Medical Center. He began an academic/private practice there, and accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Northeastern Ohio Universities, where he received the 1991 “Golden Apple Professor of the Year” award. He pioneered a laparoscopic suturing technique that he constructed as a game, the Rosser Top Gun suturing program, on which over 5,000 surgeons have been trained for improved technical skills.
In 1994, Dr. Rosser was appointed Associate Professor at Yale University School of Medicine, and Director of the Endo-Laparoscopy Surgery where he continued developing new applications of laparoscopic surgery, including bariatric procedures. Based upon his belief that video game skills and experience were directly related to his success in performing laparoscopic surgery, he and colleagues began research that has established this association. At Beth Israel Hospital in NYC since 2001, Dr. Rosser is Chief of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, and Director of its Advanced Technology Institute (AMTI), an education and research organization in the Department of Surgery at Beth Israel Hospital. He has lectured widely, prepared a series of CD-based instructional materials, and publishes his clinical and educational reports in leading journals.
